What Is Bushcraft
Bushcraft is the art of using the resources provided by our natural environment to survive and thrive in the great outdoors.
In learning bushcraft skills we benefit in many ways including:
- Increasing our ability to adapt to new challenges
- Becoming more self sufficient
- Growing our confidence
- Increasing our survival skills
- Becoming better prepared to face unforeseen problems
Bushcraft is not just one thing to learn. Â It is a group of related skills that help you survive and adapt to overcome obstacles.
Now let’s go over the bushcraft skill to learn on our list…
Bushcraft Skills #1: How To Make A Rope From Plants
Rope is another one of those essential survival gear you need for tasks like making a shelter, making animal traps, or just fixing your bootlace.
What if you didn’t bring any paracord in your bushcraft kit?  Just make some!
This rope is made from twisted yucca.  Yeah, it does take a lot of patience to make strong rope but you’ll be glad you know how if you find yourself in a survival situation.
Bushcraft Skills #2: How To Make Primitive Traps
In all honesty, you’ll probably be eating insects in a survival situation.  They are the easiest to find and full of nutrients (some actually taste good too).
Yet, hardcore survivalists will know the bushcraft skill of making snares and traps.
Bushcraft Skills #3: How To Cook Meat
Once you’ve got your pray, here’s a simple bushcraft skill: cooking meat over the fire.
You’d be surprised how many people try to complicate this task by making skewers or roasting sticks.  I personally prefer this hands-off approach.
Bushcraft Skills #4: How To Break Rocks To Make Tools
Flintknapping is the ancient survival skill of being able to break rocks into tools.
Like most other bushcraft skills, flintknapping does take patience.  It takes a steady hand and a lot of control.  You’ll end up with a lot of cuts and blisters on your hands before you master the art.
But the result will be a beautiful, homemade spear or knife that you can use in the wilderness.
Bushcraft Skills #5: How To Build An Emergency Shelter
If you need to spend the night in the wilderness, a bushcraft shelter becomes a must. After all, you need to protect yourself from the elements (including dangerous animals).
You don’t need to be a master woodsman when it comes to shelter building in the wilderness. You can learn how to build an emergency shelter for your bushcraft camp.
Bushcraft Skill #6: How To Make  Feathersticks So You Can Start A Fire
Fire is essential for survival in the wilderness. You need fire to:
- Boil water for purifying water
- Cooking food
- Staying warm
- Warding away animals
But what if you don’t have a firestarter?  Making a featherstick is a great way to get a fire going – especially if you are trying to make a fire in wet conditions.
Making feathersticks is actually pretty fun and fairly-mindless. So you can do while sitting around camp.
Bushcraft Skill #7: How To Track Animals
Winter conditions are a great time to start animal tracking.
On snow you will see many more clear prints than on any other surface with the exception of sand.
The animal that left the tracks is easier to identify and you can become familiar with whole footprints whereas at other times of the year, you may only see a partial print.
Being able to identify the clear print will help you at other times.
Bushcraft Skill #8: How To Navigate Using Stars
Bushcraft is kind of like the study of nature.
Improving your own knowledge of the heavens, the relative positions of stars and how they move over the course a night, as well as the seasons, will significantly improve your natural navigation abilities.
